Academic staff from the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at Bartın University (BARÜ) Ulus Vocational School represented the university at three scientific events held by leading Turkish institutions and universities during the same week in October 2026. Through their research presentations and academic contributions, they shared their findings with the scientific community and strengthened the department’s academic presence.

Women and Local Climate Policies Discussed at the 11th Urban Studies Congress (ICUS 2026)

Lecturers Dr. Hatice Ay and Dr. Nurçin Seymen Aksu from the department attended the 11th Urban Studies Congress (ICUS 2026), held in Ankara on 13 October 2026 through the collaboration of the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Türkiye (TEPAV) and TOBB University of Economics and Technology.
Organized around the theme “Climate-Resilient Cities,” the congress provided a platform for discussing the challenges of climate change and approaches to urban resilience. During the event, Dr. Ay and Dr. Aksu presented their joint paper entitled “An Assessment of Women's Climate Vulnerability and Participation in Local Climate Policies: The Case of the TR81 Western Black Sea Region.”

Drawing on field-based research conducted in the provinces of Bartın, Karabük, and Zonguldak, the study examined the gender-related dimensions of climate vulnerability and explored women's participation in local decision-making processes. The presentation offered a regional perspective on the relationship between climate change, gender, and local climate governance.

Metropolitan Municipalities' Approaches to Cooperatives Examined at KAYSEM15

Dr. Hatice Ay also participated in the 15th International Symposium on Public Administration (KAYSEM15), hosted by Bayburt University from 15 to 17 October 2026. She presented joint research conducted with Dr. Fatma Nalbant, a faculty member at Artvin Çoruh University.
Their paper, entitled “An Examination of Metropolitan Municipalities' Approaches to Cooperatives in Türkiye,” investigated how metropolitan municipalities support cooperatives and incorporate cooperative development into their local governance and development strategies.

The researchers presented a comparative assessment of the cooperative development visions, local development policies, and institutional support mechanisms of Türkiye's 30 metropolitan municipalities. Their findings contributed to discussions on the role of local governments in supporting cooperatives and promoting local development.

Advanced Remote Sensing and Artificial Intelligence Models Featured at UZAL-CBS 2026

Dr. Eren Gürsoy Özdemir, a faculty member in the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, attended the 10th Symposium on Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (UZAL-CBS 2026), held from 15 to 17 October 2026 at the Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Culture and Congress Centre at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) in Trabzon. The symposium was hosted by KTU's Department of Geomatics Engineering.

The scientific programme featured a collaborative study by Dr. Özdemir and researchers from other universities entitled “Prediction of Dam Deformations Using Sentinel-1 InSAR Time Series: A Comparative Analysis of LSTM, XGBoost, and ARIMA Approaches.” The study brought together advanced remote sensing techniques and machine learning and deep learning algorithms to investigate the prediction of dam deformation using Sentinel-1 interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) time-series data. By comparing LSTM, XGBoost, and ARIMA approaches, the research addressed alternative modelling strategies for monitoring structural deformation.
Throughout the symposium, Dr. Özdemir also engaged in interdisciplinary discussions and exchanged knowledge with fellow researchers on scientific developments and emerging approaches in remote sensing and geographic information systems.

Through their participation in these three scientific events, the academic staff of BARÜ Ulus Vocational School contributed to knowledge exchange across urban studies, public administration, remote sensing, and geospatial technologies, while representing Bartın University within the national academic community.
